The Steering Group notes the inclusion of this policy. However, the Car Dyke is an ancient man-made water course which traverses South Kesteven and runs along the western fen edge from Peterborough to Lincoln. The Lincolnshire Heritage Explorer indicates that it is the largest of the known Romano-British canals, and it is an important feature of the Roman landscape in the fens. Relatively small sections of the Dyke are Scheduled including an area between Bourne and the village of Dyke. Consequently, as with the Grantham Canal, a policy should be introduced to safeguard the Car Dyke and support proposals designed to develop its recreational, nature conservation, heritage and tourism potential.

It should be an aspiration to reconnect the two parts of Grantham Canal, either side of the A1. It should also be an aspiration to extend the Canal in Grantham back to its original length, up to Old Wharf Road. (The clue is in the name.) Granted, this is not going to happen anytime soon. But SKDC should have it as a formal aim, so that, if the possibility ever arises, you are in a position to support it.

There should be a similar policy for the Car Dyke. It's recognised for its nationally and regionally significant landscape, wildlife and heritage features. The Local Plan must seek to safeguard the car dyke so that its long term potential as an asset to support the growth of the local economy in the south of the district and boost tourism is also fully realised. The Car dyke is an ancient monument and we should make more of this. It is an ancient man-made watercourse that can be traced for 57 miles from near Lincoln down through the county into the Fens

The retention of Policy EN7 provides protection of the above assets and the opportunity to enhance all of the public benefits presented by our network. We are supportive of the canal restoration initiatives and are aware that the Grantham Canal Society (GCS) is actively working towards securing the restoration of the Grantham Canal to full navigation. We advise that consideration is given to any response from GCS with regards to the impact of the draft local plan on their restoration objectives.
