Regulation 18 Draft Local Plan

The Natural Environment

Representation ID: 1412

Received: 25/04/2024

Respondent: Swifts Local Network: Swifts & Planning Group

Representation Summary:

In summary, please consider endangered urban wildlife such as red-listed bird species which inhabit buildings in South Kesteven.

Therefore, please add to the policy: Swift bricks to be installed in new developments including extensions, in accordance with best practice guidance such as BS 42021 or CIEEM which require at least one swift brick per home on average for each development. Artificial nest cups for house martins may be proposed instead of swift bricks where recommended by an ecologist.

Reason: these are excluded from Biodiversity Net Gain so need their own clear policy, as supported by NPPG.

Regulation 18 Draft Local Plan

The Natural Environment

Representation ID: 1413

Received: 25/04/2024

Respondent: Swifts Local Network: Swifts & Planning Group

Representation Summary:

Please add to the policy: Existing nest sites for building-dependent species such as swifts and house martins should be protected, as these endangered red-listed species which are present but declining in South Kesteven return annually to traditional nest sites. Mitigation should be provided if these nest sites cannot be protected.

Reason: these are excluded from Biodiversity Net Gain so need their own clear policy.

Promoting Good Quality Design

Representation ID: 1421

Received: 25/04/2024

Respondent: Swifts Local Network: Swifts & Planning Group

Representation Summary:

Please add design code: Swift bricks to be installed in all new-build developments including extensions, in accordance with best-practice guidance such as BS 42021 or CIEEM. Photographic evidence of installation to be provided. Artificial nest cups for house martins may be proposed instead of swift bricks where recommended by an ecologist.

In more detail, the reason for this is:

The National Model Design Code Part 2 Guidance Notes (2021) recommends bird bricks (Integrating Habitats section page 25, Creating Habitats section page 26).

To ensure early inclusion of swift bricks on drawings for integrated design process and reliable installation on site.
